This amazing booklet gathers together what I would consider to be the key quotations for the key characters in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. If you’re teaching this text for the first time, or if you are a student in desperate need of some quotation clarification, then this booklet is exactly what you’re after!

The booklet was created with WJEC English Literature Unit 1 in mind, but it’s definitely transferable to other courses. After all, the text is the same, tight?

For each character in the novella, I’ve collected quotes (with notes), outlined key 1930s contextual information and also included a section about the importance of each character’s name (or lack thereof).

I not only always have a copy of this to hand while teaching, but I also provide my pupils with a copy. It often proves to be a bit of a lifesaver for pupils who are frequently absent!

Those of you familiar with WJEC English Literature Unit 1 will know that the examination has an extract question and a choice of two essay questions. The choice is almost always split between a character or a theme essay, both of which ultimately want the pupils to focus on the context of 1930s American society. Therefore, each character has important contextual details outlined. Of course, this isn’t exhaustive as there’s always more you could add, but it’s a super-useful starting point for year ten and elleven pupils!

If you’re a pupil struggling to talk about context beyond the old: “this is important because it reminds us of The Great Depression” – then this booklet is going to be a grade-saver.

If you’re a teacher who is sick of contextual shoe-horn sentences (as above), then this booklet will at least make marking a bit more interesting!
